Formlabs Introduces Open Materials Mode for SLS 3D Printers
We are excited to announce that Formlabs has officially launched Open Materials Mode for their SLS 3D printers. This new feature allows users to utilize third-party materials, significantly expanding the versatility and customization options for their 3D printing projects.
What is Open Materials Mode?
Open Materials Mode is a groundbreaking update that enables Formlabs SLS 3D printers to work with a wide range of third-party materials. This flexibility allows users to tailor their printing processes to meet specific needs, whether for specialized industrial applications, research, or innovative product development.
Key Benefits:
- Increased Flexibility: Users can now experiment with various materials to find the perfect fit for their unique applications.
- Cost Efficiency: By using third-party materials, users can potentially reduce material costs and improve overall project budgets.
- Enhanced Innovation: Open Materials Mode encourages creativity and innovation, allowing users to develop new workflows and applications that were previously not possible.
NEW! Nylon 12 White Powder
Nylon 12 White Powder enables colored end-use parts, that maintain the versatile and biocompatible properties of Nylon 12 Powder. Capable of printing highly detailed features with great dimensional accuracy, Nylon 12 White is ideal for customer facing end-use parts.
Nylon 12 White Powder requires printing on a Fuse 1+ 30W. Printing in an inert environment like nitrogen is recommended for maintaining the most consistent white color over powder lifetime.
- White: Crisp and clean finish for high-contrast parts
- Dyeable: Perfect for creating colored end-use parts
- Durable Prototyping: Highly capable plastic for functional prototyping
- Biocompatibility: Can be used for many medical and dental applications
NEW! Nylon 12 Tough Powder
Nylon 12 Tough Powder has best-in-class ductility and the lowest refresh rate of Formlabs’ Nylons. Nylon 12 Tough powder creates strong parts, resistant to breaking, that print consistently and accurately. Nylon 12 Tough Powder requires printing on a Fuse 1+ 30W.
Choose Nylon 12 Tough Powder for:
- Compliant Mechanisms
- Long Parts Susceptible to Warping
- Reliable & Accurate Prototypes
- Strong & ductile parts
Polypropylene Powder
Leverage genuine polypropylene for SLS 3D printing to produce works-like prototypes and durable end-use parts that are chemically resistant, weldable, and watertight.
Polypropylene Powder offers high ductility, allowing for repeated bending and flexing while ensuring durability, without the need for inert atmospheric control.
This material requires Sift 300 Sieve to be used with Fuse Sift.
Nylon 12 Powder
A Material That Does It All
Balancing strength and detail, Nylon 12 Powder is a highly capable material for both functional prototyping and end-use production of complex assemblies and durable parts with high environmental stability. Our Nylon 12 Powder is specifically developed for use on the Fuse 1.
Nylon 12 Powder is ideal for:
- High-performance prototyping
- Small batch manufacturing
- Permanent jigs, fixtures, and tooling
- Biocompatible, sterilizable parts*-hazardous and non-flammable.
Nylon 12 GF
A glass-filled material with enhanced stiffness and thermal stability for demanding industrial environments. Choose Nylon 12 GF Powder to produce stiff functional prototypes or end-use parts for applications where structural rigidity and thermal stability are critical.
Ideal for:
- Robust jigs and fixtures and replacement parts
- Parts undergoing sustained loading
- Threads and sockets
- Parts subjected to elevated temperatures
Nylon 11 CF Powder
Carbon Fiber SLS, for Strong and Lightweight Parts
Get the best of nylon and carbon fiber with this high-performance material, perfect for end-use applications requiring highly stable, high stiffness and superior strength. Choose Nylon 11 CF Powder to produce lightweight rigid parts that can withstand repeated impact and remain stable, even at high temperatures.
Nylon 11 CF Powder is ideal for:
- Replacement and spare alternatives for metal parts
- Tooling, jigs, fixtures
- High-impact equipment
- Functional composite prototypes
Nylon 11 Powder
Carbon Fiber SLS, for Strong and Lightweight Parts
For highly ductile, robust parts, Nylon 11 Powder is our higher performance nylon material for functional prototyping and small batch production. Compared to Nylon 12 Powder, our Nylon 11 Powder is more flexible, less brittle, and better at printing thin walls.
Ideal for:
- Impact-resistant prototypes, jigs, and fixtures
- Thin-walled ducts and enclosures
- Snaps, clips, and hinges
- Orthotics and prosthetics*
*Material properties may vary based on part design and manufacturing practices. It is the manufacturer’s responsibility to validate the suitability of the printed parts for the intended use.
