The Process of Importing Organic Shapes

By |2018-12-14T08:28:30-05:00December 14th, 2018|Categories: 3D Scanning, Tech Tips|0 Comments

In this article, we go into more details about the process of importing organic shapes into CAD. We will explain how we created a custom coffee pod holder by scanning a human hand and including it in the CAD design. The first step involved capturing the geometry. There are many different 3D scanners out, all of which vary in accuracy, resolution, and light technologies. In order to facilitate the scanning of the hand, we used [...]

Customer Spotlight – Miguel Horn sculptor

By |2024-10-15T10:21:28-04:00November 9th, 2018|Categories: 3D Scanning|0 Comments

Miguel Horn, a sculptor and visual artist in Philadelphia recently used 3D scanning for one of his projects. He has worked with the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts, and other local art institutions and he tries to use as many digital production methods as he can. He feels that this allows him to speed up fabrication, as well as  use a variety of different new materials. In 2015 Miguel was approached to develop a [...]

CMM Master – Portable Inspection System

By |2018-08-31T08:33:48-04:00August 31st, 2018|Categories: 3D Scanning, Tech Tips|0 Comments

Today we are going to talk about a portable CMM called the CMM Master. The CMM Master is based on the Renishaw Equator, and powered by Verisurf’s AUTOMATE software. The working volume is approximately 12” X 12” X 6” up from the plate. It has been volumetrically error mapped with the Verisurf software to an accuracy of +/- .0005î, making it more accurate than the standard Equator. Its single point repeatability is within a couple [...]

Reverse Engineering a Can Holder

By |2018-06-27T08:39:57-04:00June 27th, 2018|Categories: 3D Printing / Additive Mfg, 3D Scanning|0 Comments

We reversed Engineered this 6-pack can holder which is great for quickly snapping cans on to it and easily carry them around. Here’s a brief overview of how we reverse engineered it, improved the design, and then optimized it for injection molding. First, we used 3D System’s Capture scanner to scan directly into Geomagic’s Design X. With a resolution of .110 mm, and an accuracy of .060 mm, we were able to capture even the [...]

Differences Between Scan-Based and CAD-Based Neutral Files

By |2018-05-22T16:47:11-04:00May 23rd, 2018|Categories: 3D Scanning, Tech Tips|0 Comments

Scan-based files involve cleaning up the scan, optimizing the mesh quality, and ensuring that the scanned mesh is watertight. At this point we can generate the neutral file based on this processed scan data. CAD-based is bit more labor intensive. It involves interrogating the mesh, creating CAD sketches and CAD features and fitting them to match the scanned data. Once the scanned data has been recreated as CAD data, we can then generate the neutral [...]

At times, a customer will come to us with an idea whether it is a hand sketch, a picture, or a simple drawing with dimensions on it in hopes of creating a prototype by 3D printing it. Here, at Cimquest, we have all the tools needed to create and produce these ideas and bring them to life. To illustrate this, we have created a portable case to carry a 3D Connexion Wireless Space Mouse and [...]

Upcoming PMI-Driven Inspection Seminar

By |2018-02-21T08:30:04-05:00February 21st, 2018|Categories: 3D Scanning, Events|0 Comments

Join Cimquest for an in-depth look at PMI-driven inspection using CAD (SOLIDWORKS) and Geomagic Control X. In this workshop, you will see the seamless integration of Product Manufacturing Information from CAD driving a complete part inspection in Control X. By setting up PMI dimensions with tolerances, datums, GD&T, notes, labels, etc. in SOLIDWORKS using ‘Dimension Expert’, the inspection of the part then becomes fully automated. Presentation topics include What is Product Manufacturing Information and why [...]
